If we want people to construct mines with rails and everything we are gonna have to change how we get rails and minecarts. Both of these items use a ton of iron when they're made so unless we change it almost no one is gonna be able to use these. Unless we only want really powerful kingdoms to have mines.

Actually, that is a really, really good idea. I've been thinking that exact thing since I first started playing minecraft. Mine carts, I'm fine with, but rails, I was thinking the same crafting recipe (at least in phase 1) would give 10x or more rails than the standard recipe.
With vanilla minecraft, it almost seems like rails are only for people in creative mode.

In fact, I'm adding this to the Brainstorming section so that we can work out an exact number.

Since ore processing is not so easy so I think the normal recipe for rails should give 48 rails, or 32 if that's too many, since as i see the recipe on the wiki, it gives originally 16 rails

I say we start with 48, and adjust the balance based on player testing.

we'll test a lot ourselves too So will we have a server so we can test everything?

Yes. Someone on our team stated that they had a server, but I can't remember who. If not, I can run a server from my laptop. I have run a 5 person server from my laptop with no lag, and it wouldn't even need to be up all the time, just for alpha testing.

On the topic of rails. What are we gonna do about the insanely expensive booster rails? You don't need that many in a minecart track but they're so expensive.

Hrm. 1 gold ingot equals 1 powered rail. And there's almost nothing else to use gold on. I actually think this is reasonable. What does everyone else think?

Well gold is used on watches. Also 1 to 1 is no more efficient than what the game is at right now.Is the point that people don't need as many but can still get rails?

What about boosting all rail recipes to output 4 times vanilla?

Why not leave the powered rails as is, and make a new mine cart modification that a player has to power by right clicking or something? (i'm thinking like the old school mine carts that were man powered with a lever and such).
This also bolsters community effort early in the game, before a gold vein is found by requiring one of the miners to actually go with the minecart ferrying resources. (I'm assuming here that an iron/coal vein is priority #1 when searching for resources at the start of game). Imo, automated minecart ferrying of resources should be left to later in the game.
